We are a non-profit digital library. Among other things we operate the Wayback Machine, an Archive for the Web.
We are open
The non-profit Internet Archive wants a new design for a key page of the Wayback Machine. This is a unique opportunity to play a significant role effecting the look and feel of one of the most popular, iconic, important, oldest and much loved service on the web. The current Wayback Machine is here: web.archive.org A "beta" version, with a new "Search" starting point, and "Explore" interface, can be found here: web-beta.archive.org This new search can be used to help people find sites based on terms and URLs. Please consider the search results you see as a functional display, which itself needs a design but is not the focus of this project (having said that we will not turn down ideas about how search results are shown!) The "Page" we are looking for help with is what people will get after they select a site from search results. Today it is an "Explore" page, e.g.: https://web-beta.archive.org/#/explore/http://iskme.org from which people can go to a "Calendar" page. NOTE: If one rolls over the dots the "Why" at the bottom should list "Crawls". That is broken right now and shows "No Metadata". We expect this to be fixed soon (hours/days.) Today: Search/Search Results -> Explore Provenance -> Calendar -> Playback Desired: Search/Search Results -> Calendar (with Explore, Overviews and Playback) Where "Provenance" is "Why" we have a particular capture. The goal is to come up with a new single "page" that people get when they click on a search result from which they can explore Provenance, Overviews as well as Navigate captures across time. Provenance: We want to give people the ability to explore the Provenance of captures, which you can review by clicking on a search result from web-beta.archive.org, e.g.: https://web-beta.archive.org/#/explore/http://iskme.org (rolling over the dots should tell you which crawls they came from but is broken right now.) An alternative view of this can be found here: http://visualised.io/way/ (super-cool functionality but might be too hard for the "average" person to navigate. Overviews: we have also developed the ability to show data about hosts, domains and TLDs. You can see the metadata (JSON) for those views here: https://web-beta.archive.org/__wb/search/metadata?q=domain:google.com https://web-beta.archive.org/__wb/search/metadata?q=host:maps.google.com https://web-beta.archive.org/__wb/search/metadata?q=tld:com Here is a quick and dirty interface of some of this data: http://zijianhe-dev.us.archive.org/#/tld/edu Calendar: And finally there is the "Calendar View" page itself, with a "sparkline" navigation at the top and a calendar down below (with captures/day and a navigation widget on the top-right.) While this page has served us well we know it can, and should, be improved. We are open to all ideas and approaches. While we think the existing sparkline and calendar UI should be retained (maybe with some changes/enhancements) we will consider alternative approaches. The key goals are helping people discover and explore/learn about "captures" (we have more than 500 billion), crawls (why we have captures), hosts, domains, and top level domains (TLDs). Questions are welcomed!
