How Jane Walerud started their web page design journey

Company name

Teclo Networks SA, http://www.teclo.net

Overview

Teclo Networks develops and sells software to telecom operators globally.

Our first product enables operators to see real time mobile broadband network performance on a map of their country. It looks a bit like the maps and graphs in SimCity, but _of course_ much more sophisticated ;).

Data is presented per subscriber, per kind of mobile phone, and per kind of network usage (web surfing responsiveness/ whether videos are downloading fast enough to play without stuttering, etc.)

Operators can then see where they need to concentrate investment, whether they are delivering the performance subscribers have paid for, and perhaps if there are opportunities for them to sell more mobile broadband.

We install our software on standard multicore servers and keep up with the traffic going through the largest network backbones, 10's of Gigabits per second.

We're international: one Australian/Swede living in Switzerland, one German, one Romanian/Italian, two Englishmen, one Dutchman who has spent years in Nepal, and one American/Swede. That's it, so far. We ARE new.

The group pulls together world class Lisp programmers, 35 years of telecom experience, and a solid background (six real successes so far) in building high tech companies from scratch.

We're in this for the adrenaline rushed fun of building a company together, and we're having a great time.

Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach

Mobile Broadband (MBB) traffic is growing extraordinarily fast. Cisco says the compound annual traffic growth rate is 132%. Some operators have growth rates of 400% per year. Recently, MBB growth has accelerated, mainly driven by the latest generation of smart phones and data hungry applications; iPhone users consume about 5 times as much MBB as users of older phones, and early data from iPads show that they use 3-5 times more than iPhone users do.

To keep up with that extremely fast growth, operations managers in telecom operators are installing lots of very expensive equipment and software. Many times, they don't know where the pain points in their network really are, they don't know what effect their investments have on network performance, nor do they know enough about the quality of experience they deliver to their subscribers to really optimize their network.

Operations managers have often also bought products, for instance for customer care, which require saving huge quantities - terabytes - of data per day. It is difficult to get real information out of all that data in a timely manner.

In the telecommunications operators, our products target the operations managers, giving them succinct information about their network performance in real time.

Subscriber behavior will also be interesting to marketing managers, we hope.

Requirements

We want our customers to form a positive impression of us from the web site. They should want to work with us: we know what we're doing, and we're not too stuffy about it.

We are very small and newly started, and we do need to seem bigger and more established than we are without lying.

We want to be able to grow with the web site design and keep it for a long time. A web site design is a large part of a company identity, and we want our identity to be stable.

We don't have much material to start from. You might see that as an opportunity as well as a weakness; we will follow your lead :)

We'd like a couple of internal pages as well as a front page, to see how it fits together.

Our 99 designs logo is uploaded along with an early draft of our first product brief. We aren't attached to that template; if we need to redo it, we will. No worries.

The web site will be implemented in Joomla or Drupal.

Industry websites for comparison:

http://www.bytemobile.com (the gorilla)
http://www.aitotechnologies.com ( we liked the customer role focus)
http://www.arantech.com ( good customer point of view rather than network point of view)
http://www.allot.com (hot technology)
http://www.netscout.com ( fill the world with disk arrays. ..)
http://www.nexustelecom.com (reinventing themselves)
http://www.polystar.com/OSIX ( very competent, don't seem to want to grow)
