mehul 5 got their new product label by running a design contest:
Cold Brew Coffee Label for a local, socially conscious coffee shop
Check out mehul 5's Product label contest…
Dominican Joe is a locally owned coffee shop in Austin, Texas committed to making a positive impact in the world. We source our coffee through a non-profit from a farm in the Dominican Republic to provide fair wages to farmers and support educational development in the country.
What's your vision?
We are looking to bottle our cold-brew coffee concentrate to be sold in our shop and at local grocers. The concentrate will be sold in 32oz bottles, and is mixed with water by the consumer to create 64oz of iced coffee. We are looking to design a label for the bottle. For the most part, we have no particular design requirements in mind and are looking for ideas, but the label should fit the following specs: * Dimensions: No more than 9" wide x 4.5" tall (will wrap most of the way around the bottle); it can be full-color. * Must mention ingredients: coffee and water (coffee buzzwords: direct trade, organic, rainforest-alliance certified) * Must mention size: 32oz * Must have small space for a barcode that we will insert * Must include a small area for "brew date" with space underneath indicating something along the lines of "freshest if used within x weeks" (alternatively can just have an expiration date) * Should include our name, logo, address, and website: Dominican Joe, 515 South Congress Avenue, Austin TX 78704, dominicanjoe.com (all this can be small but should be somewhere) * Instructions on mixing and maybe a small description of cold brew concentrate so people don't just drink it straight out of the bottle (see sample labels below for examples on both of these) * A little about our story / good cause / emphasizing that we're Austin-local. More details on this can be found at our website and in some of the links below. This can be as little as a sentence or a whole paragraph - we have nothing in particular in mind. Useful links / samples: * Do a google image search of "cold brew coffee label" for examples of similar products and their labeling * A bit about us: http://www.dominicanjoe.com - see the Our Story and Our Coffee links * Use this for links to various versions of our logo and current coffee bean bags: http://www.dominicanjoe.com/design/ This is the bottle we are looking at using: http://www.specialtybottle.com/clearbostonroundglassbottle32ozwcap.aspx We're not really sure how much can fit on the label without being too crammed, so we leave you with some flexibility. And we're transitioning to a new logo in a few months (still being designed) so if you find a better way to market the product with the limited use of the logo, we're open to it. You're also welcome to modify the logo within reason. * For the winning final design, we ask that the file format be a layered 300dpi Photoshop file so we can make small edits as needed.
I wish I could give more guidance on design, but we really are starting from scratch. We had a coffee sleeve designed here last year, and one of the things we truly appreciated about the site was the wide variety of design styles that came through in the process. Once we see things that appeal, we'll try to give as much feedback as possible to refine the designs.

And then… they selected a winner!
Lana has been absolutely incredible to work with. As usual, we had a lot of questions and feedback and yet she very patiently went through everything in detail with us. We will certainly be in touch in Lana for future design projects! Thank you for the fantastic work.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
