Halsted needed a new print or packaging design and created a contest on 99designs.
A winner was selected from 166 designs submitted by 48 freelance designers.
Physical Review X
The American Physical Society is a leading publisher of a series of physics journals known as the Physical Review. We have created a new, on-line only journal, called Physical Review X or PRX (http://prx.aps.org/). PRX will be a so-called Gold Open Access journal, openly and freely available to all readers worldwide (breaking down the subscription barrier). It will have broad coverage, publishing original, high-quality research results covering all subfields of physics, but also from other scientific disciplines or fields where physics and physicists make notable contributions. PRX breaks down the traditional communication barriers between fields and disciplines.
The PRX logo was generated in 99 Designs in December of 2010: thank you talented designers! We now seek a display ad/image for print and on line use to promote the new journal, Physical Review X, commonly known and referred to as PRX.
The PRX display ad will appear in a variety of print and on-line formats. Image(s) should be visually striking and expressive, yet consistent with the scholarly nature of the journal. It is highly desirable that the image be suggestive of physics. Royalty-free photographic or graphic image or images are required. The logo might be incorporated in the image but only in an unforced, organic way--rather than just pasted or inserted arbitrarily. Color scheme that uses and accentuates the journal’s colors (blue, pristine white) is desired. SEE TEXT & COPY REQUIREMENTS BELOW.
"Breaking barriers" and "expanding access" are two primary positive characteristics of PRX. An ideal image should convey effectively the concept of something breaking out of a confinement (barrier), leading to, or followed by, positive growth or expansion.
Target Audience: Authors whose research results are potential sources of publications in the journal, and Readers of the journal: scientists in physics-based research, other readers interested in physics research, including funders of physics research worldwide.
Text and copy requirements: Product name in Cosmos font (as in web banner) and logo, organization name/logo and a QR code location all need to be incorporated into the ad design. Files are attached above.
Draft Ad Copy: "Breaking Barriers. Nothing can contain an idea whose time has come: PRX -- where open access to original research, interdisciplinary communications, and broad readership takes on a new meaning. "
Print Guidelines:
1. Winner should provide a folder containing all native files of the project (.ai or .indd file, any and all fonts, photographs, graphics, and a High Print Quality pdf file of the final product). This will give us the flexibility to reshape/resize the file as future ad projects demand.
2. Final pdf file will be 8.5"x11" High Print Quality with a 1/4" bleed on all sides. Imagery is not to be down sampled when creating pdf. (I'm not sure where the file will first see print so our initial size should probably be 8.5" x 11")
