david.griffus got their new menu by running a design contest:
Designing a menu for a 101-year-old Coney Island Diner
Check out david.griffus's Menu contest…
Jackson Coney Island is a 101-year-old lunch counter style diner in Jackson, Michigan that serves coney island hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, breakfast, etc. Diner food. Clientele tends to be on the older and lower income side, but we want to appeal to a younger and more affluent crowd as well.
What's your vision?
A little background about the restaurant. It's been open since 1914 and we are basically re-inventing it. We have the list of items that we want to serve in the attached word file (and PDF for those of you without Microsoft Word)... but we aren't exactly sure how to design a menu. This is where you come in. ------- We'd like to have a 8.5" x 14" menu that fits on four total pages (you're welcome to include food on the first page if you think that's appropriate). We're looking for a style that's simple, yet masculine and edgy that fits with our logo in the attached files. We don't have any prices yet nor are the descriptions exactly final so make sure that there is flexibility for us to make edits. I would encourage you to get creative in terms of how you group the items, name groups of items, etc. The only thing we are definitely set on are the items...how you organize them is completely up to you. I think it makes sense to have the breakfast stuff separate from the lunch and dinner stuff, but other than that use your experience designing menus for other restaurants. I want to mention that we don't want anything too revolutionary or that would be difficult for our older patrons to navigate. So nothing too far off of the reservation. Our logo and custom font is in the attached file and please use them where you see fit. It would be nice if the address, phone number, and website were on the menu somewhere. 615 E. The main thing I want to communicate is that I have literally zero experience designing menus or running a restaurant. It's a hilarious experiment and I am open to any and all suggestions that you might have on how to improve what we are doing. It can be as iterative of a process as you like...I will respond to your messages quickly and anytime that I'm not sleeping. If you need more information, please let me know and I will be happy to
