We present nearly 700 shows across the four main venues at the Edinburgh Festival.
What's your vision?
We are looking for a designer for the FRONT COVER of the 2012 ‘Joint Venues Brochure’ The ‘Joint Venues Brochure’ is a big, bold brochure containing listings and show info for everything happening at the major venues of The Edinburgh Festival Fringe – Assembly, Gilded Balloon, Pleasance and Underbelly. It enjoys a print run of over 250,000 and is one of the most widely viewed publications at the Edinburgh Festival – the world’s biggest arts event. While the brochure contains shows in every genre imaginable – theatre, dance, musicals, cabaret, spoken word, exhibitions and more – roughly half of the shows are comedy and this is where we have typically taken our cue for the cover design – it should be bright, fun and colourful. A central element will be the participating venues’ names laid out in a similar format to previous years. In recent years we have tended to use an eye-catching abstract background with the venues names prominently on top. We are likely to favour a similar approach this year but would like to consider some alternative approaches – use of people (illustration or photography) in particular. Each venue has it’s own colour – Assembly is red, Gilded Balloon is pink, Pleasance is Yellow and Underbelly is Purple. The design may use these colours but should do so in roughly equal proportions. Alternatively the designer may wish to focus on other colours. The 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival overlaps with the London 2012 Olympics and we would like the cover to reference this in some SUBTLE way. For example – a focus on the human form and activity or perhaps hula-hoops in the venue colours as a nod to the Olympic rings. In fact - hula-hoops might be a good place to start. Good luck! The main thing we're looking for is prominent featuring of the venue names and a strong, vibrant background. UPDATE - Thanks for everyone's work so far. Some nice backgrounds coming through. To inject a bit of energy in the last couple of days of the open competition we'd like to go back to looking at the title treatment and get some new approaches. The four venues should have equal prominence and use the corresponding colours but other than that please don't feel constrained. Please include "& Just The Tonic" in a smaller size. Thanks!
