johnleeolson got their new magazine cover by running a design contest:
Blend Fitness and Photography in a stunning magazine cover

Fitness and Sport Magazine gives a local perspective to individual regions' fitness enthusiasts and associated businesses. Catering to local needs we spotlight local businesses, local athletes and fitness experts, and local events.
What's your vision?
Our publication is just as much about fitness and sports as it is about great photography and we want the cover to reflect this. Nearly all fitness magazine covers look similar, with a singular athlete or celebrity pictured from the front and from the knees up on a white or black background, centered and generally with their head and/or shoulders obscuring part of the magazine title. Photography magazines generally have a singular person, shot from the shoulders up and off center with the magazine title placed over the portrait. We would like to see a creative and attractive combination of these two genres.
Update: We have encountered some designs that we are having difficulty seeing the merit of because of poor image selection and/or availability. To help with this we have provided six images that we already have licensing on, three men and three women on light, dark and intermediate backgrounds. It is not necessary to create a cover with every image as one good cover will suffice. That being said, feel free to submit as many variations as you see fit. We are first and foremost a fitness magazine and the design elements should be very clear about this (bold typefaces and colors, etc.). We also want to represent our photography roots so the design should still retain some elegance and asymmetry.
Every design category has flexible pricing for all budgets. Magazine cover starts at $399.
