Judd is a sculptor. His sculpture is focused on American wildlife, specifically the animals of the US north country. The sculptures are life size and the imagery is modern yet representational.
Logo types to explore
Here's some input from Judd: I like bold strong, clean shapes that express my style and look a little like my metalworking techniques. My buyers are average people that become very attached to my animals and people. These people are not "collectors" but rather want to display these in their garden or on their living room table. For colors I like earth tones but with red or green accents. The styles I like are modern [Henry Moore], Eskimo soap stone carving and African masks. Quite a variety! My sculpture is focused on American wildlife, specifically the animals of our north country. The sculptures are life size and the imagery is modern yet representational. My style is fluid and spontaneous, intent upon capturing movement and natural gestures that are typical of each specific animal. With my pieces, you can look into and through them. It creates an interesting dynamic with the positive and negative space. I build in a three dimensional manner, constantly rotating and welding, so the sculpture can be appreciated from every vantage point. I begin by welding a armature that is atomically correct for that species. Then I heat up the steel and forge it into an interesting gesture. I have to feel its movement or motion. Finally, I add pieces of welded steel onto the armature. Each piece is heated and bent, layer upon layer until the form is finished. Less is more. The smaller the number shapes used to define the animal the better the piece. Let the viewer’s eyes fill in the shapes that appeal to them. On another level I want the viewer to see the steel for what it is. Hot, molten, jagged, twisted and rusty pieces of metal. The previous life of this material is a beautiful contrast to the life and movement of the animals. The sculptures are made from salvaged and reclaimed steel, making them environmentally friendly. The durability of steel lends itself to the natural landscape and require minimal maintenance. The finished products have a traditional patina for accent color, along with a Permalaq seal coat. This finish may require touch up in 10 years. This patina along with the natural rusting of steel, makes a beautiful contrast to green foliage. The current site uses a free Wordpress Theme: juddnelsonstudios.com. Using the new logo we will create a custom Wordpress theme.
