Minnesota Association of Law Libraries
Attorney & Law
The Minnesota Association of Law Libraries (MALL) is a professional association for law librarians working in Minnesota, primarily in the Twin Cities metro area. Law Librarians can be found in a variety of settings: Law firms, law schools, corporations, state and federal agencies, and courthouse libraries, all with the purpose of getting accurate legal information to their lawyers, judges, law professors and students, court personnel, government officials, and ordinary citizens who need legal information. MALL members are active in the profession as writers, teachers, and advocates. Law Librarians use a variety of resources in print, film, and online, and collaborate with state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and other professional organizations to get relevant information for their users.
For this project, we, the logo committee, are looking for a new logo for our organization. You can go to our current website, MALL.wildapricot.org to see our current logo and see why we want something new, as that logo and color scheme were implemented in 1999-2000. This logo would be featured on our web page, as well as print documentation, educational presentations (e.g. PowerPoint, pdfs) we create. The people who see our logo will be primarily law librarians, but also public librarians in Minnesota, members of the legal community (lawyers, paralegals, law students, court staff), and the general public who is interested in legal topics. What we would like viewers to know when they see our brand that we are legal information experts, available to connect users to pertinent resources, whatever the format (e.g., just because most members of MALL are librarians, we use more than books to get the right information to our users). Core values of law librarianship include: • Equitable and permanent public access to legal information • Access to justice for everyone • Commitment to diversity and inclusion In the design itself, what we would like to have primarily is a logo that is more modern in style that reflects 2019 rather than 1999. Of the chosen color schemes, we are leaning towards more saturated colors, if possible, and we would prefer something that would scale well to print documents of various sizes (e.g., for brochures, letterhead, or thank you cards, up to larger sizes appropriate for posters or banners) and work well in gray scale or color. We also would like to mention that we see the primary organization logo as the first of a couple of other logos/branding projects we will do as time and money permits. We hope to work in the future with the designer of the winning logo to create additional work for us, which would include: • A mascot, such as a loon (a bird native to Minnesota), owl, caribou, some wildlife that would coordinate well with the logo • At least two variations of the main logo to brand a subgroup of MALL and an educational program that we sponsor and organize biennially. I also want to let you know that I am submitting this brief as the chair of the committee tasked for getting a new logo. The ultimate design decision will be made by the Executive Board, who might want a few small changes to the chosen design. This also means that we probably won’t be able to select a winner for at least a week after the contest ends (bureaucracy, you know.) We are open to new ideas. Thank you for choosing to help us with our logo search.
