The Ultimate Human award goes to "Grok" – my nickname for the prototypical pre-agricultural human being (circa 10,000 B.C.). Grok is the central character of my book, and of my blog. I need a graphic to represent him. I am looking for something that is more logo/icon than cartoon character. I am looking for a designer that can work with my team for all future Grok icon design iterations (for the book, our website, merchandise etc.) after the contest is complete. So the contest winner will be offered more work.
The book is titled The Primal Blueprint. Read about it below.
As mentioned above, Grok is thecentral character of an upcoming book. You can read about the book, The PrimalBlueprint, here.
This is from the back cover of thebook:
Championathlete, nutrition expert and MarksDailyApple.com healthy lifestyle guru MarkSisson is pleased to introduce you to Grok, a hunter-gatherer from 10,000 B.C.whose genetic makeup is identical to ours today - a magnificent culmination oftwo million years of human evolution and environmental natural selection.Grok's healthy diet and active, stress-balanced lifestyle promotes optimal geneexpression to create the ultimate lean, strong, energetic, smart, and totallyhealthy role model for human peak performance.
Here is another description of Grok:
Grokand his family bear a strong physical resemblance to a modern family – makethat an unusually fit modern family that maybe hasn't been to the salon in awhile. Typical of the male in 10,000 B.C., Grok stands 6'1", 175 pounds withsingle digit body fat and the well-rounded, balanced muscle definition of anOlympic decathlete.
Here are a couple questions you mayhave, followed by our answers:
What is the purpose of this graphicdesign?
It will be used as a logo torepresent the ultimate human being, Grok. It will likely be used on merchandise(t-shirts, workout gear etc.) on our website (www.marksdailyapple.com, http://www.theprimalblueprint.com) inour book and on promotional items.
In what style would you like it tobe designed?
We would like a blend of cave artand ancient Greek art,but with a modern twist and a more fluid feel. With regards to theancient Greek art, we don't want the logo to feel at all like it isancient Greek art, rather we simply like the fact that it incorporatessome amount of detail in the human figure (namely muscle definition)that cave art doesn't usually have.
We want something that is simple andminimalist, but that still provides for some musculature definition. We want itto be clear that this image portrays our ancient ancestor. Hence, the subtlecave art effect. Also to this end we are open to Grok holding a spear.
We are leaning toward somethingclose to a silhouette, but are open to interpretations.
The design needs to be such thatGrok can be re-designed to be partaking in various types of activities. Forexample, eventually we may want this icon to be sprinting, jumping, leaping, lifting, climbing, hiking etc. Something like this. (We're not interested in the reflections.)
We aren't requiring this first imageto be in any particular position, but sprinting, throwing a spear, or otherwiselooking strong and (maybe) fierce seems to be logical first step.
Original artwork only please. Thecontest winner agrees to relinquish all rights to the work once payment ismade.
We would like the files to be editable Photoshop files.
- A strong, perfect human specimenwith muscle definition (including biceps and abdominals)
- To clearly relate to our ancientancestry either by style or elements added to the design (spear, loin cloth) orboth
- Something simple, minimalist – thinkApple or Nike swish logo with a bit more detail and not quite as abstract
- Simple color palette – black, blue,cave-art/earth tones (browns, ochre, rust, etc). A single color or some mix ofthe above. Meaning just black could work, black and blue could work, just earthtones could work.
- Overly "cartoony"
- Too realistic
