crowbarmedia got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Young adult book needs a cool cover, (again - third book!)

APPENDIX MAN III Flight of the Bumble Boys
Angus is a young Australian author, originally from Melbourne and now living in Toronto Canada. Best thing is to go to "www.appendixman.com" to read further and to see the interview he made about the original Appendix Man book.
This is the third instalment of the Appendix Man series, sequel to 'Appendix Man: Australia's First Megahero' and 'Appendix Man II: Attack of the Phazzmatron'. A new villainous group, the Bumble Boys, terrorises the city, and Appendix Man seems powerless to stop them. A new hero emerges, Captain Hero-Man (who was previously Australia's greatest surf life saver from the Gold Coast), to take on the Bumble Boys. But is Captain Hero-Man actually a hero, or a villain? And will Daisy Tuck have the will to continue as Appendix Man and fight these villains?
Ages 10 - 18, girls and boys (and their Mums and Dads!)
Book cover type
We would like the cover to contain: 1. A male surf life saver's face looking towards the reader ... part friendly, part menacing, aged around 30-40 years old; 2. the title; 3. a design below the title, featuring 5 figures representing the gymnastic Bumble Boys facing off somehow against our female heroine. It's up to you as to how to put it together ..... we would like each book to have their own style, but recognisable as part of the APPENDIX MAN series. You can see the two previous winning covers for the first two books at "www.appendixman.com"
What to avoid
Its a children's / young adults book, so it should retain some fun and excitement. Given that Appendix Man is actually a teenage girl, we would like it to be somehow appealing to girls as well as boys.
It all began with a design brief.
A quick, interactive guide helped them understand their design style and captured exactly what they needed in their book cover.
Designers across the globe delivered design magic.
crowbarmedia collaborated with designers to refine their ideas
When design entries come in, you can rate them so designers know what you’re looking for in your logo design.
99designs has great collaboration tools so you can pinpoint and capture your ideas
And then… they selected a winner!
I found Zelena by looking at her portfolio samples, and thought her work looked attractive. This is my second consecutive project with her now, and I find that not only does she do good work, but she is easy to work with, as well as flexible in offering alternative elements to try in any design. She's a good partner, and productive.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
