The world is bleak, voices imitating sounds of people and other things lurk in the darkness, but the story is about hope, or "finding light." The main characters are a 40-year-old man and a 12-year-old girl. They've lived 7 years in a barren and horrific world, thus they are kind of used to it. The main themes are light and hope; anti-themes: depression and darkness. The entities that emit voices have no shape or form. You can imagine them as skinwalkers without a body, or just ghosts. Skinwalkers: native American folklore, creatures that mimic voices If you are in the darkness without a light, you disappear. Where 99% of people have disappeared to, is a mystery. That's why the whole story revolves around being near light. Also it's been 7 years into the apocalypse, so if you try to portray a daytime, consider that there will be grass, moss, weeds, saplings and creeping plants growing on rusted cars and crumbling buildings, fractured windows (earthquakes) as well as animals living inside them, in particular pigeons, rats, etc. Small detail, but an integral part of the story so as to portray a realistic post-apocalypse.

If you decide to represent the main characters, make them look like silhouettes. I describe them vaguely so that readers can fill in themselves as the characters more easily. The only feature is that he has a cloak, and they carry heavy backpacks, with lanterns, and always a flashlight in their hand. The only descriptions of them: He looked at her from time to time: the eyes of her like oceans and the face like an angel and so of light—as if inaureoled. If she’s not of Heaven then Heaven is not for me. The kids looked stunned as if they had forgotten what kindness looked like. This time it looked like a bearded man with silky wild hair and a warm face of understanding, with eyes like deep wells of wisdom and sorrow. One other comment: if you want to feature a not-night sky, in the book I always describe the sky as amber, or a permanent sunset, which to me gives a feeling of beauty that will soon fade. A deep dark blue can be worked in there as well. (The sun shouldn't be visible, and not to mention, the stars have disappeared :D )
