The Buccaneer Coast: Blood, Steel, and Empire, Book I
James L. Nelson
James L. Nelson is a former professional mariner and the multiple award-winning author of more than twenty-five works of fiction and nonfiction, including the acclaimed Norsemen Saga. He lives in Harpswell, Maine, with his former shipmate, now wife, Lisa Nelson and various combinations of their four children. When not writing Nelson continues to work with traditional ships, as well as cruising with Lisa aboard their beloved S/V Paraclete. www.jameslnelson.com
For more than one hundred years after Columbus stumbles onto the New World, the West Indies are held in Spain’s iron fist, and no threat to that absolute rule is tolerated. But such total control cannot last, not with the riches of an empire at stake. French, English, Dutch, they all struggle to pry open the Spanish grip. But one threat, all but unseen at first, will become the most dangerous of all: the buccaneers. Camped on the north shore of Hispaniola, these half-wild men shun civilization as they eke out a living hunting the island’s feral livestock. Among them, Jean-Baptiste LeBoeuf — hulking, silent, deadly with musket and blade — lives out his exile, content that no one in the hunters’ camp is at all curious about his past. But when a hurricane sweeps through the Caribbean, creating horrendous devastation in its path, it up-ends the buccaneers’ rough existence. And in its wake it leaves opportunity as well, a chance for a new life for LeBoeuf and his fellow hunters. This stroke of luck, however, is not all it seems, and when even greater violence is visited upon them they find themselves in deadly conflict with some of the most powerful and ruthless men in the Spanish Empire.

Book cover type
The Buccaneer Coast will be the first book in a new series of historical novels centered on the buccaneers of the 1600's. I am the author of more than 25 works of fiction and nonfiction. My current series, The Norsemen Saga, is published in English under my imprint and in three other languages by traditional publishers as well as audio books. For the cover of Buccaneer Coast: I envision using an old map or chart of the Caribbean, ideally Hispaniola, for the background, perhaps with another image on top of that, but I am open to ideas. No skull and crossbones or any cliche pirate imagery, please. Also, I don't generally like photos of people on the cover, i.e. a model dressed as a buccaneer. Images that include people at a distance might work. Fonts that suggest the historical nature of the book, but readable. -The back cover should have reviews of past books, the blurb for this book, author bio, picture and credits. It should also say: Author Photo: Lisa Nelson, Map Design: Chris Boyle. Copy for the front and back covers and author photo are attached elsewhere here. The book will be published on Kindle Direct Publishing and also in paperback format through Amazon so it must meet those standards. -The cover must work well in a thumbnail format Book length is apx. 330 pages. Size is a standard 6X9 format. The bottom of the spine should have my Fore Topsail Press imprint logo, attached below. I have included white on black and black on white, whichever works best. I will likely need a layer file of the cover for the audio book publisher With any luck this series will catch on and I will be doing more covers that will echo the style of this one. That's about all I can think of. You can find out more about me and my past books at www.jameslnelson.com. I've attached one book cover that's along the lines of what I'm looking for, but I see there really are not a lot of examples of books out there like the one I'm doing here. While I have in mind what I'd like, I am also very interested in exploring other creative ideas. I'm a writer, not a graphic designer.
