Buenos Aires Triad
FE Beyer is Frank Beyer is a writer based in New Zealand interested in history and international relations. His articles attempt to shed light on such things as the Chinese mafia in Argentina and French gunboat diplomacy on the Mekong. His work has appeared in The South China Morning Post, LA Review of Books, Asian Review of Books and History is Now Magazine.
In Buenos Aires, a violent gang follows tourists from the airport and robs them when they arrive at their hotels. Gang leader Gustavo recruits Lucas to work in the arrivals hall picking the gang’s targets based on their watches, luggage and clothes. A reluctant newbie in the criminal world, Lucas’s life changes forever when a British couple resists an attack and the gang’s trigger-happy Venezuelan gunman shoots. The story becomes international news and the Argentine President demands the capture of the culprits. Fearing arrest, Lucas flees to Bolivia. Back in Buenos Aires, Xiezhi Triad boss, Fat Ping, who provided the gang with duplicate licence plates, wants assurance from Gustavo that the police won’t come looking for her. With the shooting no longer in the news, Lucas returns to Buenos Aires to restart his old life selling watches. This plan ends when he finds Gustavo living in his apartment. The two men start extorting Chinese-owned supermarkets for Ping. When one storeowner refuses to pay, they throw a molotov cocktail into his supermarket to frighten him. This works nicely as the owner coughs up and extortion looks like a profitable activity. Then economic problems with big supermarket chains and politics between Argentina and China lead to a police raid on the Xiezhi Triad. Ping ends up in jail, while gambling addict Gustavo and his reluctant sidekick Lucas go on the run. Finally, Lucas must act to free himself of Gustavo.
People interested in crime in Argentina/Latin America, the Chinese mafia, and/or action-packed existential thrillers.
This is a noir-style crime story based on real cases that happened in Argentina. The setting in the book is very accurate in terms of the situation in Buenos Aires in 2020. The title should be bigger than the author's name. Open to all fonts. The idea of the cover is to mix the setting of Buenos Aires with the presence of the Chinese mafia -- in this case the Xiezhi Triad. For colours blues and blacks are good, although the Xiezhi will probably be golden, but not too bright. Buenos Aires is probably best presented by a representation of its skyline, but the sun in the middle of the Argentine flag is another possibility.
What to avoid
The font should not be too flowery. Dragons.
