I have written a Fantasy novel entitled, "The Land Beyond". One of the main plotlines of the story revolves around an ancient, yet beautiful old-fashioned Well. This Well is at the end of a path which cuts deep into a dense forest. I envision a cover which depicts a 16 yr old boy (he is a poor peasant, with clothes torn and tattered - so bear that in mind) walking down a dusty path towards the Well. In his hand he has a wooden water bucket. Also, the boy must be seen from the back or distant side - no face! Dark hair, too, either black or brown.
The cover (including the back and spine) needs to be eye-catching, with vibrant (but earthy) colors, and needs to stand out as both a thumbnail and on the bookshelf. The book is 5.5 x 8.5". The spine will be about .7"
The feeling I want the cover to convey is the sense of wonder. I would like it to look like a completely normal scene, yet with something that feels subtly magical about it; as if the boy is approaching the border of the natural and supernatural.
The Well itself should be moss green at the base with a gradual rise into a turquoise-ish blue, or something close to this, and it must be old fashioned - with a draw-rope. The path he is walking on must curl like a ring around the base of the Well, with the forest beyond hugging the path tightly. [the Well is not 'in' the forest, but on the edge of it. The Path ends at the Well, but loops around it to make a small clearing in the forest.]
Oh and one last thing - the Well must be round enough that it is conceivable for the boy to fit inside it. The Well is the primary focal point, and the Peasant boy is the secondary.
Contest is guaranteed and blind!
Note that on the back we need room for an ISBN.
All of this said, there is a lot of latitude for creativity - as long as the non-negotiables aren't violated! Ex. type of Well, path, boy, and forest. I will be primarily choosing based on what catches my attention and most expresses the theme of wonder with these elements.
