WATCH THIS! did something very few other designers managed to do - create a cover design that put the focus on my teen character rather than on the historical figure of Abraham Lincoln, while still managing to keep Lincoln in the design. AND managed to make it feel current and very much a novel of today/tomorrow, rather than something historical. This blew me away, and the design kept getting better as it was refined. I'm SO delighted with the final cover of my book!
How nana.abraham started their book cover journey
Who are you known as?
For Black Girls
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
A self help/ Mentoring book for young women of colour. Ages 13-20
the book talks about identity, not giving into stereotypes, excepting our natural hair, body image and relationships. It is a Christian book.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
A front and back book cover that is elegant. The Title of the book is "For Black Girls
The shaping of a young woman" I have an image I will attach but I'm also open to new ideas. I originally wanted a black cover with elegant cursive writing in white that said For Black Girls and then the second half of the title smaller in printing.
I have content that needs to go on the back but i'm not sure if I also need to submit that to you.
In the intro of the book I talk about how in West Africa women wear waist beads to shape their bodies as well as many other practical uses. I describe how they are considered something to make someone beautiful. I compare the beads to the advice in the book saying that my hope is that the advice will help shape their lives into something beautiful.
So anything with African beads, or things that will catch a young black girls eye is good. I want something that embodies what the book is about. I'm going to attach a picture I'd like to be the cover but i'm also open to a completely new concept.
